Edit: Not sure why this is getting so many downvotes. Homebrew also makes installing dependencies easier. I previously had a part of this answer with inaccurate information I have since changed it. I believe it is currently accurate. You can also update much faster. Ffmpeg download mac.

Greetings all, looking for some info here. My girlfriend has a computer running a Phenom II x4 955, with 8GB of G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1600; she has two 4gb kits of 2gb sticks per kit running in dual channel mode. Running on an ASRock 990FX Extreme3. The computer has been running fairly flawlessly for the past couple years now, but recently within the last couple of months its been randomly getting hung up on the POST during boot up; in that it won't even get TO the Post. It flashes the Megatrends Copyright at the top of the screen and then before it moves on to anything else, it hangs right there.

Only way to get around it, is to reset the computer. IF, I then enter the BIOS (UEFI); I find that her RAM settings have changed from DDR3-1600; to reading as DDR3-1333! Every time the computer hangs on this boot process, I find that the Ram is reset back to 1333; but when I go in and manually change it to 1600; then it boots up fine!
There are NO overclocks running on this computer! Anyone else experience anything like this on this particular motherboard, and any ideas on what the problem could be? Does the BIOS need to be updated? Originally Posted by hakz since you said the said rig is running for a couple of years already. So I believe a bios update isn't necessary. Which is also using 8GB of G.Skill DDR3-1600 and an Asrock Z68 Ex4 Gn3; I just took my sticks out and stuck hers in for the weekend while she was at work, and I didn't have any problems on my computer. Granted though, this is not a perfect test. Sort of a poor-mans process of elimination. But I am tempted to put MY sticks into her computer, and see what happens. Just an update here, we've been running with our Ram sticks swapped for a few weeks, let her run with MY ram sticks in her computer for a few weeks, and it seems its her Motherboard that is the problem, and not the Ram sticks. So switched back this weekend.
A little more info that we've found on this. When the power button is pushed, and before the POST; the Megatrends logo shows up, video is intialized and in the lower right corner a series a numbers flashes. Then the system goes into the POST, Ram count, etc, and boots to Windows. Now, those numbers in the lower right corner just before the POST beep; it always locks and hungs on 'B4'.

Then we hit the reset button, go into the BIOS and reset her RAM from ddr3-1333 back to 1600 like its supposed to be, and it boots up fine. We have to do this every time its powered down and then back on. Now I'm wondering what to do about it.
